If you want ChatGPT to give you answers that sound like you instead of something generic, you need to set it up the right way from the start.

That means filling in your Custom Instructions. These live in your ChatGPT settings and tell it who you are, what you do, and exactly how you want it to respond. Once you set them, they apply to every new conversation.

The easiest and most accurate way to do this is to let ChatGPT interview you, and the best way to do that is in voice mode. Talking through your answers feels more natural, you will think of more details, and ChatGPT will get a better sense of your personality and style.

The Two Sections ChatGPT Will Help You With

When you open Custom Instructions, you will see a few boxes. The only ones we are focusing on right now are:

  1. How should ChatGPT act?

This is where you set your voice, style, and traits. Think about how you want ChatGPT to sound when it talks to you.

  2. What else should ChatGPT know about you?

This is where you put the important context. Your interests, values, goals, audience, and anything about your business or work that will help ChatGPT give you more relevant answers.

Step 1: Let ChatGPT Interview You

Most people just type a few sentences into these boxes and call it a day. That is why their results still feel off.

Instead, you are going to have ChatGPT interview you in stages so it gets all the details that matter.

Copy and paste this into a new chat. When it tells you, enter Voice Mode to have the conversation. If it does not prompt you, just enter Voice Mode and tell it you are ready.

START PROMPT

"You are an expert in strategic brand development, AI optimization, and advanced ChatGPT personalization.

Your task is to run a multi-stage interview to collect all information needed to fill in the Custom Instructions fields “How should ChatGPT act?” and “What else should ChatGPT know about you?” in a way that fully reflects my goals, voice, and preferences.

Guidelines for you:

  1. Interview structure

    • Ask questions in themed stages, starting broad and moving into specifics.

    • For each stage, ask follow-up questions like “why?” or “tell me more” until you have a deep understanding of my answers.

    • Confirm your understanding before moving to the next stage.

  2. Topics to cover in detail

    • My bio in short, medium, and long form.

    • My voice and tone rules including:

      • Words or phrases I use often.

      • Words or phrases I avoid.

      • Sentence length preferences.

      • Formality level.

      • Emotional undertones I want in responses.

    • My expertise and blind spots so you know where I am confident and where I may need more explanation or guidance.

    • My goals for using ChatGPT including personal, business, and creative goals.

    • My formatting and output preferences such as bullet points, numbered steps, paragraph length, headline styles, and whether I prefer concise or in-depth answers.

    • Examples of past work that represent my ideal style, so you can model responses after them.

    • No-go zones covering anything I never want ChatGPT to do, say, or assume.

    • My audience details including who I communicate with, their needs, and the tone they respond to best.

  3. End goal

    • Once the interview is complete, summarize my answers into:

      • “How should ChatGPT act?” (up to 1,500 characters)

      • “What else should ChatGPT know about you?” (up to 1,500 characters)

    • Make both sections as specific as possible so they produce consistent, on-brand responses in every chat.

    • Deliver the two final sections in a clean, copy-and-paste format for my settings.

Begin Stage 1 by introducing the process, confirming that you understand your task, and asking your first set of broad questions. First, tell me when to enter voice mode to begin the interview."

Step 2: Fill in Any Missing Details

After the interview, if you feel like ChatGPT missed something or didn’t go deep enough in certain areas, say:

Ask me any additional questions you need to fully understand me, my work, my audience, and my preferences so you can give me the most accurate and on-brand responses possible.

Keep answering until you are confident ChatGPT has a complete picture of you, your style, and your goals.

Step 3: Get Your Custom Instructions

Once you have answered all questions and filled in any missing details, tell ChatGPT:

Please create my Custom Instructions for “How should ChatGPT act?” and “What else should ChatGPT know about you?” Keep them under 1,500 characters each, but make them as specific and detailed as possible.

This will give you the two sections you need to paste directly into your settings.

Step 4 – Review and Refine

Read each section carefully and ask yourself:

  • Does this sound like me?

  • Is it specific enough?

  • Is anything missing or unclear?

  • Does it include my tone, goals, audience, and boundaries?

If it needs changes, give ChatGPT direct feedback such as:

  • “Make this more conversational”

  • “Add that I prefer bullet points for lists”

  • “Remove anything that sounds generic”

Keep refining until you are happy with both sections.

Step 5 – Paste Your Custom Instructions into Settings

Once your two sections are finalized:

  1. Open ChatGPT.

  2. Click your name or profile icon in the bottom left.

  3. Select Settings.

  4. Click Custom Instructions.

  5. Paste your “What else should ChatGPT know about you?” section into the first box.

  6. Paste your “How should ChatGPT act?” section into the second box.

  7. Save your changes.
